A Few of My Favorite Family Photo Locations in Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs

One of the most common questions I get when families book a session is, “Where should we take our photos?”

Choosing the right location plays such a big role in the overall feel of your session. The perfect setting creates beautiful natural light, gives little ones room to explore, and helps create timeless images that feel relaxed and genuine.

Over the years, I’ve photographed families throughout Chicago’s northwest suburbs and have found a few locations that photograph beautifully in every season. Here are some of my favorites:

Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve in Long Grove

Buffalo Creek is one of my favorite locations for family sessions because of its beautiful open spaces, soft natural light, and scenic trails. It offers a timeless natural backdrop that works beautifully for playful family sessions and creates gorgeous golden-hour images.

Vehe Barn in Deer Park

Vehe Barn has such a unique charm and offers a beautiful rustic backdrop for family photos. It’s especially beautiful during the warmer months and creates a classic setting with so much character while still feeling relaxed and natural.

Downtown Long Grove

For families wanting something with a little more texture and charm, Downtown Long Grove is such a beautiful option. The historic details, walkways, and cozy atmosphere create a timeless look that feels both polished and inviting.

Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve in Lake Forest

Fort Sheridan offers some of the most stunning scenery for family sessions. Between the open landscapes, natural trails, and beautiful lakefront views, it creates a gorgeous setting for families looking for a more elevated outdoor session.

When helping families choose a location, I always consider the season, the ages of your children, and the overall feel you want your photos to have.

Whether you’re looking for open natural scenery, charming historic details, or breathtaking lakefront views, there are so many beautiful options throughout Chicago’s northwest suburbs.

If you're planning a family session and aren’t sure which location is the best fit, I’m always happy to help guide you to the perfect spot for your family.
